This is oversimplifying, but I've always felt that Tweedy is the McCartney of Uncle Tupelo: his solo stuff is maddening and occasionally brilliant. Farrar was Lennon: pretentious and self-important but much more interesting.

i can go with that. however, as i've mentioned before, i think UT pales in comparison to both latter bands
Never got Uncle Tupelo. And while I do respect the guy, Mr. Son Volt has never done it for me, either.
