whites only

all this rumbling about the beatles "white album" has got us to thinking. would it be better as a single album? (well, that's an easy one. yes) where do you side? GIHYB sees the record as lennon's finest (and ringo's for that matter). we encourage you to post your 10 to 14 sequenced track listing here ... and let the argument begin.

let's have em. here's mine:

1 Dear Prudence
2 Ob La Di, Ob La Da
3 Happiness Is a Warm Gun
4 I'm So Tired
5 Piggies
6 I Will
7 Julia
8 Everybody's Got Something to Hide
9 Sexy Sadie
10 Long, Long, Long
11 Savoy Truffle
12 Cry Baby Cry

7 Lennon cuts
2 Macca cuts

not done sequencing, stuck with the actual listing minus deletions, but suddenly realized how badass leading off with prudence is.

gee. Macca gets dissed. how original!

im surprised you didnt go for both Honey Pie cuts; but then, that would give Paul more screen time, so.

congrats, GIHYB. you probably couldn't make a worse White Album if you tried. hard to take this seriously, actually.

hey! it's quiz kid donnie smith! I guess I've been skooled!

I didn't diss sir paul, i simply think it's lennon's record.

some facts:

-I don't like Back in the USSR. never have. i will admit the fact that mike shithead love takes credit for it doesn't help
-not into helter skelter. the beatles couldn't rage. that's probably their best attempt, but not on my watch
-I can't include a tune like "Blackbird" when the amazing "I Will" is on there (and they're kinda like the same song)

as far as taking it seriously, i'm sure there's another blog out there somewhere for serious people like yourself. go read it instead! so put up you tracklist and SKOOL me some more, or go read GODI'MSERIOUSABOUTMACCA.com!

toodles!

1. Back in the USSR
2. Dear Prudence
3. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
4. Happiness Is a Warm Gun
5. Martha My Dear
6. I'm So Tired

9. Julia
10. Mother Nature's Son

12. Long, Long, Long
13. Honey Pie
14. Cry Baby Cry
15. Good Night

Macca: 7; Lennon: 6; George: 2

Some of the rest coulda been non-album singles ("Glass Onion", "Revolution" for ex.) but otherwise...

The point about Back in the USSR is well-taken. Paul was always Beach Boy-smitten, from Rubber Soul forward, but it is a fine homage. And to leave out "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is mindless obstinance. Nothing more)

exactly! GIHYB's list reeks of his usual "Im gonna be clever and not pick out the big hits" nonsense. again, hard to take his list seriously and would discredit him as a music geek if I myself was one.

eric clapton doesn't need another release credit (he blew that on 'ridin w/ the king'). btw, when does he get inducted in the RnR Hall for "sitting in on a beatles session"?

godihateyourband said...

i didn't look at it as "hits". aren't all the beatles songs hits? yeah, i'm just here trying to clever my way thru life ... thank god i get mad trim

you cannot claim to be any kind of "music blog" and put together that White Album. sorry. whats next, claiming Beyonce is your 5th favorite Destiny's Child of all time? your even bringing up the subject of the white album is a joke if thats what you do with it. im only trying to help before you render your own self a joke, GIHYB. one more..."list" like this and I will call a boycott.

you dont want Marley and me on the same side. the hardcastle & mccormick of these things, we will bury you. i recommend you "rethink" your list, or be prepared to be shut down.

godihateyourband said...

how bout this macca fags? how about we reduce abbey road to its deserved EP length? it's easy if you get rid of the lennon material (easily his worst record).

"you cannot claim to be any kind of "music blog"" WAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!

this isnt about McCartney vs Lennon, its that you cannot expect someone to take see your track listing here and then even remotely take you even vaguely serious, as opposed to some uber-hipster clever-cleverland resident. its amazing to me that anyone else has offered their own sequences instead of just rolling their eyes at you.

agreed re: Abbey Road. Lennon's shit there is worthless. Come Together is THE most overrated Beatles "classic." Its terrible. Harrison and Slumbers/Weight/End save the record. my least fave.

GIHYB: you are on notice.

I'm Hardcastle. Bottom line.

And I'm out of this McCartney-Lennon thing. In fact, I agree that White Album is a Lennon record more than a McCartney record.

But While My Guitar Gently Weeps is a great cut, hit or no, Clapton or no.

You're just trying to get the clever chicks, and Xmastime and I see thru that.

As for Abbey Road, I've accepted your gayness on The Who for some time now, but Abbey Road is a McCartney bomb - it is closest to Wings, and despite the lemony goodness of Golden Slumbers forward, Harrison has the prime cuts for that record.

Unless you can mount a defense for Maxwell's Silver Hammer and Oh! Darling, you best shut your piehole and settle down for part II of Xmastime's autobiography, "The "Battle of the Network Stars" Years."

I really do not want to get in the middle of this war of the words amongst you guys--especially since it's so much fun enjoying it as an observer--but I must come to the defense of "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" and "Oh! Darling". (Full disclosure: Abbey Road is my favorite album and I'm a disciple of The Church of McCartney, while clearly recognizing he's got feet of clay and harboring a strong dislike for spiked Kool-Aid.)

"Maxwell" is probably the most maligned song with a McCartney writing credit, after "Ebony and Ivory", yet I'll take it over "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" [shudder], for instance, any day. As for "Darling", I find it to be a heartfelt hommage to doo-wop, every bit as valid as its counterpart: Lennon's doo-wop sendup section in "Happiness is a Warm Gun".

As for George writing the prime cuts on Abbey Road and Paul's tunes sounding the "closest to Wings": Lennon certainly believed the former; and yes, Wings could be pretty lame but you can objectively assemble a solid single disc with that band's best tracks.

Of course, your mileage may vary.

Im with you on oh darling. but defending maxwells silver hammer in any way is indefensible!!!!!! :)

also baffled how AR could be your favorite. but hey, stranger things have happened i guess. (not really)

Kiko Jones said...

Well, "Come Together" has gotten old, and "Octupus's Garden" is filler, but I enjoy every single one of the rest of the tracks; the production is stellar, to boot. So, yeah, Abbey Road is my favorite album of all time, by the way.

(Among Beatles albums, Revolver and 'The White Album' come next.)

godihateyourband said...

wings are awesome ... and they suck, but that's mccartney in a nutshell. the thing that kills me about 'maxwell' is you see them spending alot of time on it in the "let it be" film. that's pretty sad. it's awful and they wasted time they could have been recording 'back off boogaloo'.

Kiko Jones said...

"Wings are awesome ... and they suck, but that's McCartney in a nutshell."

Um, yeah.

Oh, and I will one day record a reggae version of "Maxwell"... maybe it won't suck.

godihateyourband said...

i could easily fill a couple cds with great wings cuts. add the first couple solo joints, and we might even have another (been diggin 'ram' recently).

as for reggae maxwell, let's do the world premiere right here kiko! look forward to it!

Kiko Jones said...

Hey, GIHYB: how about a 15-track Wings comp/playlist as a guest post on "5"?

Are ya mad fer it?

(Um, sorry...got a little carried away.)
