husker done

can't tell when this article came out in filter. the credit says this month, but the end sez '07. regardless, it's a pretty incredible post-mortem by the band. one of our faves.

as xmastime and i always remind ourselves, name another group (besides the foo fighters) with 2 more incredible songwriters ... and so it's on the record, the warner bros years (save a few amazing cuts, well a bunch, but by their standards, not enuff) are pretty unremarkable. (for the real deal see new day rising, flip your wig, zen arcade, metal circus ... in that order ... land speed record had 2 dozen chances, still awful).

post-du required:

grant hart "good news for modern man"
bob mould "workbook"
sugar "copper blue" (name a better 4 song starter, there are, but we need comments)
grant hart "intolerance"
husker du " the living end" (released post-mortem, from their last tour)

Forget about good, let alone incredible, who is the other songwriter in the Foos? (Or did the joke just go over my head?)

Just off the top of my head, the first 4 tracks on Nada Surf's Let Go (2003) are pretty tight.

Oh, and the new Bob Mould is pretty solid:

hafta go back and listen to bobby's latest. first spin didn't hit me. haven't really liked anything since "last dog and pony"-- which in retro wasn't all that.

as for the foo's. i credit kurt as a co-songwiter. alright ... the joke is over. what a group! chews gum AND sings!!!

don't know much about nada surf (though we shared a rehearsal space back when), but have been meaning to check out the catalog.

Btw, don't know if it's your cup of tea, but the first (and self-titled) Paul Weller solo album starts off with 4 killer tunes: "Uh-Huh, Oh Yeah", "I Didn't Mean to Hurt You", "Bull Rush", "Round & Round". Pretty sweet.

I wil have to go with Uncle Tupelo and perhaps the Jayhawks. And Copper Blue is one of my favorites of all time.

i could only go with UT if you counted AFTER the band. i still think UT is way overrated. son volt and wilco are head and shoulders above their former incarnation.

jayhawks nod is nice ... but imagine being that good at the time and being arguably the FIFTH best band in your city?
