the avett brothers

Yeah, I also checked out The Avett Brothers after reading the equivalent of a small phonebook worth of positive press. (Or should I update the analogy to a 'medium-sized blog'?) Not impressed. My problem is, I can't deal with prolonged exposure to alt-country. And by prolonged I mean more than 10-15 mins.

kiko, i can't use that angle. hate the term "alt-", but i dig many of those bands. it's just when the best word i can come up with about a band is "scruffy", i gotta bail.

I didn't think much of 'em after listening to the first CD of theirs I heard ("A Carolina Jubilee"), but I saw them live and that swayed me. A few dozen shows later, I still like 'em. And I dig all their CDs, too, even the one I wasn't too hot on at first.

Songwriting's gotten better as they've progressed (though I wouldn't say the lyrics on Mignonette are particularly dumbass...to each his own). For me, the heart of the playing covers up any inadequacies of the songs. But that's probably colored by seeing the songs done live.

I'd say if you don't like Mignonette (my fave), you probably won't like 'em. Some like Four Thieves Gone better (it's a fuller sound...Emotionalism is a little more adventurous).

Not all that succinct, and likely not persuasive, but there it is.

And there was no pacing involved.

You should check out this amaaaaziiing jam band called WILCO. It's like James Taylor fronting the Grateful Dead.
